MB & F Horological Machine Uhren Hands-on

Zurück im Januar, während in Genf, ich habe glücklich belästigt die gesamte Sammlung von MB & F Uhren. Diese schönen Horomaten waren bereitwillige Teilnehmer, und ich streichelte sie mit Sorgfalt und Bewunderung. Ich denke, die größte Frage, die ich für mich selbst beantworten konnte, war "sind diese Uhren tragbar?" Nun, kurz gesagt, die Antwort ist ja - meistens. Ich sollte beginnen mit erklären, was der Punkt der MB & F-Uhren sind, wie ich es verstehe.
MB & F drückt aus, dass ihre Mission nicht ist, traditionelle praktische Uhren oder Herrenschmuck zu machen. Mit Blick auf ihre Entwürfe und hören MB & F Gründer Max Busser (und seine Kollegen) und es ist klar, dass es sich hierbei um luxuriöse mechanische Spielzeug basiert auf einem Leben zu schätzen wissen Sci-Fi und Männer Fantasy-Pop-Kultur. Raumschiffe, Kämpfe Achsen, Roboter, Gadgets, und alles andere in dieser Mischung sind Teil der Zeitmesser Inspiration. Der "HM" -Teil des Modellnamens, der für "horologische Maschine" steht, ist so ziemlich zusammengefasst. Dies sind Maschinen, die die Zeit zu erzählen. Sie sind als Uhren getragen, und die wirkliche Anspielung auf sie ist die Maschine Teil davon. Die Uhren von MB & F machen zwar coole Dinge, sind aber weniger komplexe Innovationen in ihrer Funktion, denn sie sind von Designinnovationen.


Nehmen Sie zum Beispiel das neueste HM2-Modell. Die "SV" -Version, die ist. SV steht für Saphirsicht. Sie können ein schönes Bild davon im Fleisch sehen. Die gesamte Frontplatte der Uhr ist aus einem unglaublich harten, einzigen Stück aus synthetischem Saphirglas zu machen. Was ist der Punkt, um zu zeigen, dass MB & F-Lieferanten bereit sind, in höchst zeitraubende Handlungen zu engagieren, um die Marke zu gefallen (eigentlich war es ein Schmerz für sie, einen Lieferanten dafür zu finden)? Es geht darum, die mechanischen Innereien der automatischen mechanischen Uhr sehen zu können. In der Lage zu schätzen, was in die Konstruktion und Ausführung der Maschine geht. MB & F ist nicht besorgt über traditionelle horologische Überlegungen wie z. B. Ergebnisse oder solche Dinge. Sicherlich wollen sie ihre Stücke sagen, die Zeit recht gut, aber auch gute Lesbarkeit ist nicht das, was sie denken. Es ist mir nur eingetreten, dass MB & F Uhren-Designer in gewisser Weise das genaue Gegenteil der Seiko Uhren-Ingenieure sind. Beide talentiert, aber mit wirklich unterschiedlichen Zielen.
MB & F will alle Arten von Popkulturbefestigungen nehmen, die Männer gute Assoziationen mit (gut, nicht gerechten Männern) haben und Uhren bilden, die diesen Geist in der Weise verkörpern, die nicht vorher erreichbar ist. Aufgewachsen Star Wars und immer wollte ein Droid alle Ihre eigenen? MB & F nimmt diese Designer-Roboter-Look und ist irgendwie in der Lage, um es auf Ihrem Handgelenk in einer völlig nicht-geeky Weise. Als ich hier zum Beispiel über die HM3 schrieb, zeigte ich Ihnen, wie das Gesicht der Uhr einem mechanischen Gesicht ähnelt. Andere sehen es als Raumschiff. Allerdings sehen Sie es, das gleiche Genre gilt.






Jeder der MB & F Uhren haben Augen auf dem Zifferblatt - ich habe das Gefühl, die meisten jemals neue MB & F-Uhr haben ein "Gesicht" des Gesichts. Sogar mit dem ursprünglichen HM1, können Sie ein Paar googly Augen sehen. Die HM1 ist immer noch die teuerste MB & F Uhr. Es ist das einzige Tourbillon des Trio, und es hat einige sehr teure Saphirbrücken. Dieser Entwurf sah verrückt aus, als er vor ein paar Jahren enthüllt wurde. Heute sieht es im Vergleich zum HM2 und HM3 fast zahm aus.
Natürlich ist die Ausnahme die sehr geschmackvolle HM2.2 Alain Silberstein Uhr. Das sehr limitierte Editionsstück (auch hier zu sehen) soll ein bisschen wie eine altmodische Kameraschachtel aussehen. "Alain Silberstein konnte einfach alles machen, was er mit dem Stück wollte, und ich liebe das Ergebnis. Ich verstehe, dass eine weitere spezielle Zusammenarbeit zwischen MB & F und einem anderen Design auf dem Weg ist. Dies wird mit der HM3 und wird einige Frosch-wie sieht man mir erzählt.



In kurzer Zeit werde ich mir die neueste MB & F Uhr, die HM4, ansehen. Gerüchte im Überfluss über seinen Look, und MB & F ist vorhersehbar eng umschlungen. Was ich weiß, ist, dass es wieder ein Raumschiff sein wird. Es wird ein gut gehyptes und verdientes hochkarätiges Stück sein. Tatsächlich sind die Leute hinter MB & F Teil der horologischen "Maschine". Max Busser selbst grundsätzlich reist die ganze Zeit. Treffen mit Sammlern und Einzelhändlern, er ist das Gesicht und Dampf hinter der Marke - zusammen mit denen, die mit ihm reisen. Was mich beeindruckt, ist die Leidenschaft, die er in die Designs und die persönliche Kommunikation der Marke einfügt. Er predigt seine Arbeit besser und mit mehr Energie in einem Jahr, als die meisten über eine ganze Karriere machen. Ich bewundere das wirklich. So, während ja, es gibt eine Menge von "Bild" hinter MB & F Uhren, es ist ein Bild, das sie verdient haben.
Zurück zu meiner ursprünglichen Frage, ob die Uhren sind tragbar. Körperlich sind sie. Nicht wirklich so riesig am Handgelenk, wie Sie denken, sie sind. Ich müde, Ihnen gute Abbildungen dieser Tatsache zu geben, indem ich die Uhren selbst trage. Und in ihnen zu sehen? Nun, die gute Nachricht ist, wenn Sie eine verrückte Avantgarde Luxusuhr tragen musste, und MB & F würde wahrscheinlich schneiden Sie es so gut es sollte an oder in der Nähe der Spitze der Liste. Lew & Huey Cerberus

Regular Time Bum readers should already know a little bit about Chris Vail. He is the iconoclastic founder of Lew & Huey watches, boldly waging a one-man war on boring watches. He is also an occasional Guest Bum and all around mensch. This past week, he shipped me all three versions of his new Cerberus, the everyday watch in the Lew & Huey line up. Let me tell you, Chris has a refreshing idea of "everyday."

If I were asked to describe a solid everyday watch, I would say it should be a 42mm round case, as this is the size most guys seem to want. I'd suggest 100 meters water resistance, so you could get the most use out of it. A bracelet would be a must. Maybe a combination of brushed and polished finishes to make it interesting. Finally, a conservative black or white dial. There, I've designed a watch! The most boring watch on earth. This is why I blog and Chris designs. 

The Cerberus does indeed start with a 42mm stainless steel case with 100 meters of water resistance, and it does wear a bracelet, a 22mm H-link that is brushed with solid end links. It fits neatly against the case with no unpleasant gaps and no squeaks or rattles. It secures with a signed, tri-fold clasp. About the only criticism I can muster is that there no polished surface on the bracelet to coordinate with the polished surfaces on the case. Yes, I know. I'm nit-picking here. 

The movement is the Miyota 9015, a high beat, high quality automatic. It is an excellent unit, and increasingly popular among micro brands. The only negatives are a somewhat noisy rotor, and the fact that I have written about it so many times I can recite its specs in my sleep: 28.8k bph, 24 jewel,  hacking and hand winding capabilities, and a 40 hour power reserve.

Now it gets interesting. The lugs are twisted, similar to the Omega Aqua Terra or Lew & Huey's own Riccardo. The upper surfaces, bezel, and crown are polished. The sides are brushed. The lugs curve downward to hug the wrist, and feature drilled lugs for easy spring bar removal. The crystal is sapphire, of course, with an anti-reflective coating and a barely perceptible dome. Flip it over and you will discover the Lew & Huey logo dog Sparky rendered in three-headed, fire breathing form. He also appears on the crown in his usual one-headed guise. It is an attractive case, with many welcome details, but it is not the star of the show.

The real action is on the dial. The Cerberus comes in three color ways, each with a textured dial surrounded by an brushed and anodized rehault that lends a pop of color. You have the choice of grey and red, blue and orange, and white and blue. Moving inward from the bright ring finds a chapter ring in the main dial color, with numbers that match the rehault. The index continues on a another brushed ring set below the first, the indicies printed in the reverse color. Finally, you reach the main dial with its vertical pinstripe texture, and Sparky in monochrome relief. The applied markers are polished and filled with SuperLuminova, just like so many others you may have seen, but close inspection reveals another subtle detail. They have beveled edges that catch the light, reflect the rehault color, and create a touch more presence. The white date wheel peeks through a polished, beveled frame at 6 o'clock, truncating that marker. 

After all this rich layering, you couldn't have boring hands, could you? They are - and please stay with me here - a broad dauphine style, with blunt tails and noses, polished, but vertically bisected with a black line, and partially filled with lume that starts just behind the tip and extends to only 2/3rds the length, creating the illusion of a semi-skeletonized hand. The second hand has an aircraft style counterweight and is tipped in the accent color. Got all that? If not, just squint at the pictures. I remind you again, this is the sort of detail Chris lavishes on an everyday watch. 

Given my description, you might think the Cerberus is part peacock, a flashy confection ill suited to daily wear. Au contraire mon ami. The overall effect is actually quite sober. What you notice at a casual glance is a handsome dial that catches the light in intriguing ways, providing a shifting array of tone and texture. The only element that demands your attention is the color ring, and even then, in the best possible manner, like a bright tie against a conservative white dress shirt and grey suit. 

The Cerberus is also an appropriate size for a modern men's watch. A 42mm diameter is on the larger side of mid-range, but it should suit all but the smallest wrists. Lug-to-lug length is a relatively compact 50mm, made ever so slightly smaller by the curved lugs. On the wrist, the watch sits comfortably and with just over 12mm height, it tucks neatly under a cuff. 

This is a watch you could easily wear every day. Need to wear a suit? The Cerberus is ready. Pulling on a polo for some golf? Grab the Cerberus. Did it get wet? No problem, just don't scuba dive with it. Through it all, it will look amazing. Getting a little bored at that staff meeting? Just gaze into that dial and try to count all the clever bits.

Con: Not much to gripe about here, but a little brightwork on the bracelet might have been nice.

Diver's Watch Gift Guide

A friend asked me to recommend a watch for her significant other. Christmas is coming and she wanted to get him something special. This is the sort of question watch nerds live for, so I jumped at the chance. She thought I could come up with something that would be a better value for the money. Value for the money? DeepBlueWatches.com does some nice diver's watches at good prices and they tend to be on the big side at 44-48mm wide. They offer both quartz and automatic movements. I dig my quartz Sea Ram, but my current favorite has got to be the new Deep Star 1000. It is a real looker with Miyota 9015 mechanical movement inside. Seiko diver's watches are among the best in the world. I reviewed a Seiko Prospex SUN019 last year and absolutely loved it. This 200m brute has a Kinetic movement that uses a swinging rotor to charge a battery, which is a very cool combination of the two technologies. It's a big sucker too - over 47mm wide. They are all over Amazon for about $550. Really, you can't go wrong with a Seiko. 

Hagerwatches.com makes some amazing watches for the price. The Hager Commando series I reviewed is a great value with top notch construction and materials, a modified ETA 2824 automatic, and has the added bonus of being assembled in good old, crab-lovin' Maryland. It is 42mm, which is a good size without being over the top. I particularly dig the midnight blue dial. It is a relatively conservative design but undeniably sharp and smart enough to wear with a suit. They start at $600. 

ArmidaWatches.com in Hong Kong does great affordable divers. I own an A6 and have reviewed the A8 brass case, which is one of the only watches my wife has actually complemented me on. It is 43mm across the bezel, runs a Seiko NH35 automatic, and is rated for 300m. The brass is something different as you can polish it to keep it bright or let it tarnish to develop a brown patina over time. They have 15% sale through 12/20. 

Singapore's ZelosWatches.com offers the nifty Helmsman – like this stainless and silver-grey model I reviewed. The channeled case sides, multi-layer dial, and dual-crown design create a distinctive package that houses a Miyota 9015 automatic movement. It measures 43mm wide and is rated for 100m. Prices start at $490. 

BorealisWatch.com from Portugal does a range of very cool divers and sport watches. I have the Scout Sniper, a tough, 44mm watch with a Seiko mechanical movement for just $300, which is a steal for this rugged, 300m, military style diver. Tritium tubes offer the added benefit of a decades-long glow for excellent nighttime visibility. I wear mine on the steel bracelet and have no qualms wearing it on weekend adventures with jeans and a t-shirt or to the office with a suit and tie. An excellent all-a rounder for very little money.

For those looking for a bit more flair, I'd suggest LewandHuey.com. Their Seiko-powered, 42mm Orthos is slick dress-diver with all the specs you want from a 300m tool watch, along with a refreshing sense of fun. I just wore mine out to a fancy dinner, delighting in the fact that the red sun ray dial matched my tie, cufflinks, and socks. You can buy more sedate color combinations too, but life is short. Live a little! You can get one now for $450.

Finally, AnsteadWatches.com makes the Oceanis for $650. I have the first version of this watch and it has become one of my all time favorites. Like the original, the new Oceanis has a 44mm case, 300m water resistance, and a neatly configured dial. Version 2.0 has been slightly upgraded with a cog-tooth bezel, stainless steel bracelet, and a high-beat Miyota 9015.
